Player Profile - John Butler (1st Oct 1997 - 30th Dec 1997)
John joined Celtic from Wigan Athletic after his retirement from professional football. He started at Prescot Cables, but was spotted by a Liverpool Scout, however, Liverpool didn't want him so Wigan snapped him up. In two stints, he made over 300 appearances for Wigan between 1981 and 1997, with a spell between 1988 and 1995 at Stoke City (who paid £100,000), notching up 262 appearances for them. While at Wigan he played in every single position, including goal, though he is nominally a right back. He helped Wigan and Stoke to three promotions between them, and won the Football League Trophy in 92 with Stoke, beating Stockport County. He is now a delivery driver.
