
Steve joined Celtic on loan from Mansfield Town. He started with Derby County in 1979 and made 77 appearances with a spell on loan at Port Vale. In 1984 he joined Walsall for £25k and 71 appearances and two seasons, and in 1986 he started his seventy three appearances at Plymouth Argyle (for a fee of £17k), with a 10 game spell on loan at Chesterfield. He was player of the year at Plymouth. His longest spell with a club came at Notts County (who paid £70k for him) between 1988 and 1995 making 266 appearances. Between 95 and 2003 Steven had several clubs, Watford, Plymouth again, Rotherham, Rushden and Diamonds, Mansfield, Oldham Athletic and Lincoln City. He won three league play-offs, two with Notts County and once with Plymouth. After becoming goalkeeping coach at Macclesfield, he retired following heart surgery in 2010.
