Dean reckons that his name always attracts jocular comments, but it is his football that has impressed. He started his career with Halifax Town in 1985, making nearly 200 appearances over 6 years and becoming club captain, before moving on to join Scunthorpe United, where he made a further 100 appearances, including one at Wembley against Blackpool in the third division play off finals. After first being ent on loan to Rochdale in 1995, he decided to join them full time, where he played in an FA Cup match against Liverpool, the team he supports. After a couple of stints on loan back at Halifax, he joined Celtic in February 1998, then in midfield. After us, he joined Lancaster City, where he stayed for a couple of years before becoming part of the budding Bradford Park Avenue squad. When he was released by the Yorkshire outfit, he decided to return to the best of his previous clubs - Celtic. However, after not getting enough first team football, there was an animacable parting of the ways.
