Gary was born in Teeside has had a wide and varied career across several league clubs. He started as an Everton junior way back in 1985, before joining Middlesbrough in 1986. He made over 250 appearances in a Middlesbrough shirt between 1986 and 1993, and even managed to bag 7 goals! During his 7 year spell at Riverside he spent a couple of months of 1992 on loan to Southend. After his release from 'Boro, he joined Bolton Wanderers for a year, before moving on to join Burnley when he struggled to get into Wanderer's first team. Three years and over 150 appearances later, Gary moved onto Preston North End in 1997 for ?50,000, where he spent four years, and made over 100 appearances. In 2001 Blackpool were in need of a quality defender, and splashed out ?20,000 on the then 31 year old defender. He made 22 appearances for the Pleasure Beach club, but has since been released to join Celtic. He has made 572 league appearances, and managed to 21 goals
