Match Preview :- South Shields - Tuesday August 17th, 2021 (19:45:00)

On Tuesday, Celtic open their 2021/22 home campaign against league favourites South Shields. The Northeast outfit started their campaign with a 3-0 home win against Mickleover. Tickets for this game are available on the gate or through our online ticketing system.

South Shields will be looking to get promotion this season, having missed out in the play offs the first time, then having two curtailed seasons. Combining both of the last seasons into one does give a good indication with most teams having played 42 games. Although South Shields only played four away games last season, they were unbeaten, beating Bamber Bridge and Gainsborough, whilst drawing with Ashton and Hyde. With the other curtailed season taken into account, you have to go back another nine games to find their last away defeat, a 2-1 win by Whitby. South Shields did lose twice last season. In their only five home games, they were beaten 1-0 by Matlock and 3-1 by Radcliffe.

Combining the past two seasons, their top scorer is Jason Gilchrist, who has 19 league goals. Gilchrist has joined York City, but Shields have got a replacement this season, with Ntumba Massanka scoring twice in their win over Mickleover.

South Shields last visited Bower Fold in February 2020 with the game finishing 2-2, Darius Osei equalising twice for Celtic. Our visit to their place in the same season saw South Shields win 2-1 in the league back in October 2019, with Chris Smalley grabbing what should have been the equaliser before a dubious penalty saw Shields win the game in stoppage time. Their last win at Bower Fold was at the end of October 2019 in the FA Trophy, when they beat us 2-0.

In South Shields last match, the 3-0 home win over Mickleover, South Shields lined up with two former Celtis in the shape of Jon Shaw and Darius Osei. Their team was:

1. Miles Boney
2. Jordan Hunter
3. Blair Adams
4. Jon Shaw
5. Dillon Morse
6. Callum Ross
7. Darius Osei
8. Rober Brigs
9. Ntumba Massanka
10. Nathan Lowe
11. Conor Tee

1. Grant Shenton
2. Luke Barlow
3. Stephen Brogan
4. Ioan Evans
5. Kennan Quansah
6. Stephen O’Halloran
7. Charley Doyle
8. Sam Wedgebury
9. Jack Ryan
10. Scott Bakkor
11. Callum Harris
