Gareth is a Welsh international defender, who made nine appearances for his national side between 2000 and 2005, but lately has been assistant manager to Simon Haworth at Clitheroe, joining Celtic alongside Simon to continue that role. He started his playing career at Liverpool alongside Jamie Carragher and Michael Owen. After leaving Liverpool academy in 1999, he briefly joined Panionios in Greece, making fifteen appearances. A loan spell at Tranmere Rovers turned into a full time spell lasting seven years, making 271 league appearances and scoring 14 goals. Combined with the twelve loan appearances and 55 cup appearances, he made 338 appearances in total. In 2006, Gareth moved to Doncaster Rovers, making 165 appearances and scoring eight goals and helping them to promotion to the Championship in his second season. In 2010 he joined Derby County, going onto make 96 appearances in three seasons, moving into coaching the Derby County academy in 2013, before joining Bury. He made only 11 appearances for Bury between 2013 and 2014, moving to Chester in 2014 after a brief 6 appearances spell at Notts County. Gareth made 43 appearances for Chester, appearing in virtually every game. There followed one more season for the thirty-eight year old, making 35 appearances for Stockport in the 2015/16 season, making an unused substitute appearance against Celtic at Bower Fold. In 2016 he joined Simon Howarth at Clitheroe as assistant manager, and although registered to play, never appeared. In 2017, he made 5 appearances for Skelmersdale United, before re-joining Simon as his assistant at Celtic.
