On Tuesday night, Celtic face Wythenshawe Town in the last of a run of home matches. Wythenshawe Town are currently thirteenth in the league on ten points, seven places and four points behind sixth placed Celtic, with four games in hand. Kick off 7:45pm.
Wythenshawe Town were promoted last season, along with neighbours Wythenshawe, who pipped them to the post on the last day of the season. This season, an excellent FA Cup run, culminating in defeat at home to Farsley on Saturday, has meant they have fallen behind in league games giving them a false position in the table. If they were to continue their points per game of two for their four games in hand, they’d be top. As it is, they have only played two league games away from home this season, drawing the most recent, 0-0 away at Clitheroe, and winning their opening day fixture 3-0 away at Hanley. Wythenshawe Town have yet to concede away from home in the league, the only team who can currently claim that. Their only loss so far this season came at home when Newcastle Town beat them 2-1. Their most recent home game saw them beat Bootle 4-2.
Nicholas Hepple scored two of the four goals against Bootle, putting him top of their league goal scoring chart. Seven other players have scored a goal apiece. On a goals-per-game basis, conceding four in five gives Wythenshawe Town the best defence in the league, at 0.7 goals per game. Away from home, they have scored three, at a rate of 1.5 goals per game, overall, they have scored 1.8 goals per game, failing to score in only one game, the goalless away draw Clitheroe. They are also the only team in the league not to concede a single goal in the second half of any match, conceding all four in their first half.
This is our first meeting with James Kinsey’s former team.
In Wythenshawe Town’s last match, the 1-0 home defeat in the FA Cup to Farsley, Wythenshawe lined up as:
1. Greg Hall
2. Isaac Abankwah
3. Matty Liptrott
4. Louis Jeanne
5. Aaron Morris
6. Luke Merrill
7. Sam Sheridan
8. Luke Nock
9. Nicholas Heppel
10. George Boyd
11. Jean-Louis Akpa-Akpro
In Celtic’s last match the 1-1 home draw to Hanley Town, Celtic lined up as:
1. Charlie Monks
2. Javid Swaby-Neavin
3. Jack Tinning
4. Jordan Butterworth
5. Aaron Chalmers
6. Max Leonard
7. Ash Leather
8. Liam Tongue
9. Joe Duckworth
10. Prince Anuniru
11. Matty Bryan
Wythenshawe Town’s position is false, they are a much better team than their league position suggests, and should not be underestimated. Strong defensively, with former Celts Greg Hall, Matty Liptrott and Sam Sheridan, they will give Celtic a stiff test.
