On Saturday, Celtic travel to Staffordshire to face Newcastle Town. Newcastle are currently nineteenth in the table on seven points, fifteen places and ten points behind Celtic having played four less games. Kick off 3pm.
A good FA Cup saw them finally go out away at Scunthorpe having previously held the conference national team to a 1-1 draw in Newcastle, but back in Scunthorpe lost 5-0. In the league, they have played only six matches, leaving them with some catching up to do, especially as they have only one win so far, and that was away. Their two home games have been a draw and a loss. Away from home, they’re unbeaten, three draws and a win. On a points per game basis, if they continued that across their four games in hand, they would have eleven points, be eleventh and be midtable.
With such a difference in the number of games, on a per game basis, Newcastle have the joint third best defence in the league, with a goal per game conceded. Incidentally, so does Celtic. They have kept one clean sheet and failed to score once, both in the same game, their last match on Tuesday when they drew away with Atherton. On average they score a goal per game at home (1.1 overall) and concede 1.5 (1.2 overall). Jacob Twyford and Jake Avery both have two goals, with three others. Only Jake Avery and Jack Derbyshire have scored at home.
We’ve met Newcastle Town twice, last season, with Celtic winning both. In our first ever visit to Newcastle, we won 4-3, with Matty Bryan, Aaron Dwyer, Brad Byrne and Scott Wara scoring, Wara’s goal in stoppage time sending Celtic home with the points. Dwyer got both in the return fixture.
