Richard made one substitute appearance for Celtic in our 2-1 away win over Welling United in March 1994. He is noted for breaking Patrick Vierra's shin in an FA cup match in 2001, called a two footed horror tackle at the time. He joined Celtic on loan from Carlisle United whom he'd come through the youth ranks to go on to make over 200 appearances (and score 3 goals) for, during his spell there he also had a loan stint at Barrow. in 2001 he signed for Cambridge United making 12 appearances, including the FA cup game, before joining Workington in 2002. In 2003 he moved to Gretna as they joined the Scottish Premier League, making 36 first team appearances in his three seasons there. in 2006 he returned to Workington, before moving in to management in 2008 with his home town of Penrith.
