Celtic started strongly, but an own goal upset that, and gave Hyde a foothold and they outplayed Celtic in the second half.
Five minutes in, and Celtic had been pressing the visitors across the pitch, with Liam Tongue first getting a shot off to test Callum Hiddleston, but lacked the power. However, his pass was perfect through Hyde’s static defence allowed Connor Hughes to go through one-on-one and round the keeper before slotting home the opener. The lead lasted a minute, when a defensive header from Sean Tse turned into a mix-up with Charlie Monks not on the same page equalising for Hyde. Tse nearly made up for the own goal, but his curling shot from outside the box hit the crossbar.
Five minutes later and Hyde got their nose in front, when Akeel Francis brought down a lofted ball, rounded three defenders and the keeper to slot into an empty net. Celtic could have equalised just before half-time when Tongue tried with a top corner shot from thirty yards, pushed onto the bar from Hiddleston, and then blocked Hughes at the near post.
The second half saw Hyde the more dominant. When Monk pushed a free kick onto the bar, Jack Redman nipped in to smash the rebound home and never looked uncomfortable, inviting Celtic for an answer. The gloss came with twenty minutes to go, and came far too simply, with a cross in for Connor Heath to slot home and give Celtic’s neighbours the Keith Trudgeon Memorial Trophy for the second consecutive year.
