Match Preview :- Clitheroe - Tuesday August 22nd, 2023 (19:45:00)

On Tuesday Celtic continue their league campaign with an away trip to Clitheroe. Clitheroe are currently fourth in the league, two places above Celtic on goal difference, with both teams on four points. Kick off 7:45pm.

Clitheroe sailed through their FA Cup match on Saturday, beating Padiham 5-2, with John McGrath scoring a hattrick in the last fifteen minutes. Like Celtic, Clitheroe have won one and drawn one in the league. Most recently, they drew 2-2 away at Trafford. Their opening match saw them beat City of Liverpool 2-0 at home.

Last season, Clitheroe finished fourth, but lost out in the play-offs. Only Macclesfield won more home matches, with Clitheroe winning eleven, drawing three and losing five. Additionally, Clitheroe were high scorers last season, scoring seventy with only Macclesfield and Workington scoring more. That came at a cost, with Clitheroe the weakest defence of the top ten teams, conceding fifty goals.

We’ve not played Clitheroe competitively, at least in the last forty years, but have played two friendlies in Clitheroe. Both of which Celtic won.

Sefton Gonzales made three appearances in the 16/17 season. Ethan Kershaw, who made four appearances last season, mainly as a sub. Ross Dent was with Celtic for two seasons, and almost ever present making seventy-eight appearances and netting nine times from the 18/19 season to the 19/20 season. Danny Wilkins is also still at Clitheroe after leaving Celtic in 2014, after making forty appearances and scoring five. Last, but not least, Domain Rouse, who made thirty-eight appearances last season and scored three.

Elliot Wynne is eligible again after his sending off against Hanley Town, and now has competition for his place with Luke Hewitson joining on loan from Liverpool’s under-18s academy.
