John is a product of the Morecambe youth academy set up, and progressed through to the first team by the time he was 16. He was quickly spotted by Stockport County, who paid ?150k for him in 2002. He went onto make over a hundred appearances and score three goals for the club until his release and subsequent joining of Bury in 2005. After starting the season with Bury and making eleven appearances, John went at first on loan to Morecambe and then made the move permanent in October 2006. At the start of the 06/07 season, Fleetwood Town tempted him away, but it wasn't long before he was back up the pyramid at Forest Green Rovers, joining them in November 2006 and going onto make 64 appearances and score five goals. In February 2009 his contract was terminated by mutual consent, and he turned down a return to Fleetwood to join Steve Burr at Celtic.
