Steve is returning to his home town club by joining Stalybridge, having been born here. He started out as a youth at Crewe Alexandra, before breaking into the first team, and making over 100 appearances for them, scoring his first goal on his debut in 1992. His firstteam appearances were sporadic due to injury, and after a loan spell with Chesterfield, he joined Blackpool in 1998. He was at the seaside for three seasons before dropping into non-league football with Northwich Victoria in 2001. He was almost always selected for Vics, scoring some important goals over his four years there. On his release, there was a flurry of activity, with Celtic being victorious in capturing his signiture.
