Double penalty save dumps Celtic from the cup
By Deborah Taylor

Avro get their second win over Celtic, this time dumping Celtic from the FA Trophy after Grant Shenton saved two penalties in the shoot-out.

Although Celtic dominated possession in the first half, actual chances didn’t come. It took forty-five minutes for only a half chance. Jordan Burton, a foot inside the box, smashed his half-volley over the bar after Matty Bryant found him with a pinpoint cross. Not that Avro had any chances at all, with their only shot of the half a thirty-five yard hopeful punt from Jack Morrow which sailed well over the bar.

The first shot on target by either team came moments after the restart. But Max Harrop’s curling free kick barely troubled fomer Celtic custodian, Shenton. Avro singularly failed to breach a solid looking Celtic back line, and when Bryant’s low cross found Harrop a yard from goal it should have been game over. However, Harrop failed to connect properly, and Shenton gratefully pounced on the bobbled shot.

Without having a shot worthy of the name all game, Avro got Celtic to penalties.

Harrop kicked off the spot kicks, followed by Max Leonard. They both scored, as did their opposite numbers, Liam Ellis and Jake Cottrell. However, when Shenton saved both Jai Curren-Nichols and Michael Brewster, but Joe Rathbone and Deane Smalley scored theirs, it was game over for Celtic.
