Sam Booth was the busier of the two keepers in a match Celtic controlled from start to finish, scoring from the spot and a team goal to go through in the FA Trophy against a struggling Trafford.

Although Celtic kept the lion share of possession in the opening twenty minutes, the only clear-cut chance came from a Benni Smales-Braithwaite cross turned goalward by Jack Irlam. That changed around twenty minutes in, when Ellis Horan got two chances in the six-yard box with a sensational double save from Booth. The ball came out to Irlam who had an entire Trafford team to pick his shot through, so took the ball into the box, knocking it past Booth who slid through Irlam, conceding a penalty. Irlam took it himself, putting Celtic ahead. Horan twice went close in the rest of the half, and Smales-Braithwaite fired a free kick wide and saw a curling effort cleared off the line by Jordan Fagbola, who required treatment after putting his head in the way of the shot.

The second half continued in the same vein, Irlam and Smales-Braithwaite going close before Smales-Braithwaite put in another looping cross, Elliott Rokka arriving at the back post with a clinical finish to give Celtic a cushion. Content to sit on a two-goal lead for the last twenty minutes, Trafford did work some chances of their own, Liam Tongue denying Fagbola a consolation with a goalline clearance, and getting in the way of a rocket from former Celt, Brad Byrne. In stoppage time, Celtic sliced Trafford open again, Ivan Egharevba one-on-one with Booth, but the Trafford keeper again made a decent stop to keep the scoreline respectable, even though the visitors exited the cup at the first hurdle.
