Our over 50's Walking Football Team, Vintage Celtic, were back in competitive action yesterday, taking part in the first Cheshire FA Tournament at Egerton FC over in Knutsford.
Stalybridge Celtic FC are one of five clubs appointed to the Cheshire FA Walking Football Steering Group, putting standard rules and structure into the future of Walking Football across the county.
The Tournament was a pilot competition, prior to a new monthly league being launched at Cheshire FA HQ in Northwich in October, open to all Teams playing the slower version of the beautiful game.
Vintage Celtic took to the field in good spirits, but were quickly brought back down to earth with an opening 1-0 defeat to Macclesfield Runners. Next up were Widnes FC who were despatched 2-0, including a wonder strike by Brian Coll, of which Alan Shearer would have been proud of. The final game in the group was a tame 0-0 encounter with Barony Boys from Crewe.
The lads did enough to make it through to the Semi Finals, but came up against a strong, and eventual winners, Northgate Strollers from Chester, losing 1-0. So, onto the 3rd place Play Off versus Silkmen Old Boys, the lads ended the day with a 1-0 victory.
So the record for Vintage Celtic so far stands at -
Manchester City Monthly League - Runners Up
Bower Fold Festival - Runners Up
St. Helens Tournament - Winners
Frodsham Festival - Winners
Wythenshawe Games - 3rd
Cheshire FA - 3rd
Vintage Celtic are back in action again on Sunday 27th September at Soccer in the City, Manchester, hoping to get yesterday out of their system and back to winning ways.
