Stalybridge Celtic are delighted to announce that the Manchester United, WBA and England legend Bryan Robson OBE has agreed to perform the official unveiling of the Professional Footballers’ Association (PFA) plaque in memory of Bert Whalley at Bower Fold on Tuesday 27th July at 6pm.

Bryan Robson will be joined by, amongst others, Bert Whalley’s granddaughter, Lindsay Vare.

Whalley played for both Stalybridge Celtic and Manchester United. He was later appointed by Matt Busby as a coach at Old Trafford where he was instrumental in developing the skills of many young footballers that became known as the Busby Babes.

Born in Ashton-under-Lyne, Bert Whalley died in the Munich air disaster on 6th February 1958.

The plaque will honour a local man who was loved by his community.

Following the unveiling a tribute match between Stalybridge Celtic and Manchester United Under-23s will take place at 19.45 at Bower Fold, tickets will be available in due course.
