Ashton born Gary started out at Woodley Sports, before joining (then) Conference outfit Runcorn. After a season with the Linnets, Gary moved across Cheshire to join Northwich Victoria at the start of the 2000/01 season. He was with the Vics for two seasons making eighty appearances (and scoring three goals), before signing for Droylsden at the start of the 2002/03 season. He was an ever present rock at the heart of the Droylsden defence (and also Club Captain) for five seasons, eventually helping them secure promotion into the Conference National. Conference National appearances were hard to come by for Gary, and he spent some time on loan at Curzon Ashton and Chorley.
