The Trophy Goes Home
By Iain Benson
Hyde deservedly took their trophy back to Ewan Fields after putting in a display that Celtic didn't match.

Celtic did have the first chance, a Turley free kick that Dootson spilled, but there was no blue shirt near enough to take advantage. Straight away, Hyde converted their first chance, Johnson getting to the by-line and cutting the ball back for Smith to side foot between the defence and Pettinger.

Hyde continued to press, and after Hume fouled Seddon, it required a good save from Pettinger to stop Smith's free kick doubling the visitors? lead. Another foul, and another free kick, this time lifted into the path of Seddon, who couldn't find the target, putting the ball wide. Seddon tried again moments later, but Snodin got in a good block at the expense of a corner. Pettinger pushed the corner away but only as far as Wharton, the ex-Celtic midfielder's shot was powerful and on target, but Pettinger was up to it, catching and holding well.

Celtic got slightly back into the game in the last quarter of the half, Black's cross testing Dootson as he and Sykes went for the ball, Dootson ending up in the net, but the ball staying out. Parton showed his touch is returning, dancing past two defenders along the touchline before trying to thread the ball through to Turley, Lynch blocked the ball coming back to Parton, a near post blaster was well saved by Dootson.

Hyde started the second half by doubling their lead; again the defence and keeper lacked communication as a Smith's free kick off a Garvey foul was floated into the box for Seddon to sneak between defenders and plant a header into the back of the net.

One of Celtic's trialists, Adam Lee, was brought on, and showed good quick feet, twisting and turning through a pack of Hyde defenders who couldn't stop him legally, so took his legs away. Garvey's free kick was on target, but didn't stretch JP (on for Dootson). His punt down field bounced between Snodin and Pettinger, they left it for each other, and there was Seddon again to slide the ball into the back of the net, and send the Trophy back to Hyde.

Snodin tried to make amends with a curling twenty yard effort, but it was straight down the middle and no problems for JP. Seddon almost got his hat-trick when he got behind the defence, but was unable to capitalise, putting the ball narrowly wide.

In truth, Celtic looked disjointed, and Hyde looked hungry. There were occasional flashes, but Celtic need to continue their pre-season campaign to get the hunger on show by our neighbours today.
